I've Got the Breaking Bad Bug

I know I'm probably the last person to watch this popular television series. I've heard about it for years, but cancer and crystal meth are pretty grim subjects, so I steered clear.

What finally made me take a look was Bryan Cranston. I enjoy him immensely as the Dad in Malcolm in the Middle. And because I consider comedic talent to be the highest form of acting, I figured he would be quite good in a serious show too.

I'm 5 episodes into Breaking Bad. Five episodes in 5 days is about as close as I get to binge watching. I don't have time to sit and watch 6 hours or more of TV in a day. But if anything could tempt me to binge watch it's Breaking Bad. It's just so powerfully written. The dialogue rings true to life. The social commentary is deep in so many categories. The situations are an artful blend of tragedy and comedy. Walter White's cold calculations alongside his loving heart are like a complex gourmet sauce.

And Skyler White has really captured my heart. How can I not empathize with a fiction-writing woman selling online? It's the pity and disappointment displayed by Skyler's sister that touches my heart. I can relate to family members thinking of one as a silly dreamer wasting her life.

And I officially want a talking pillow.

I'm looking forward to watching more of this show. Although Breaking Bad is not exactly doing for Albuquerque what Portlandia is doing for Portland, it is brilliantly written.

2014 Wizard World Cons Have Exclusive Variant Marvel Comic Covers for VIPs

I've started following news about comic cons so I can learn more about the scene. In October I attended a regional convention the Grand Rapids Comic Con and really enjoyed the experience. A comic con is a fun venue to work in and it was a good audience for marketing my fantasy fiction.

Wizard World Inc. that operates many major events around North America recently announced a deal with Marvel Comics to offer VIP attendees exclusive access to comics with special cover art at its 16 conventions in 2014 attendees.

Better Late Than Never - Giving iBooks as Gifts Now Possible

I wish I had noticed this bit of news before Christmas so I could have mentioned it to last minute gift shoppers, but I just saw it today. There's always next holiday season and all those birthdays until then to give ibooks as gifts. I think ebook gifts provide an affordable way to give digital gifts, especially when you don't have time or inclination to ship a book.

Apple Enables iBookstore Gifting for the First Time (via BestTechie)
So let’s say that your mother just got a brand new iPad or iPhone for the holidays, and one of the things they’re most excited about is getting into the e-book game with the iBookstore. Gifting them a book from the iBookstore would be a great little…

Third Novel of Unlife Legend Series to be Free on Kindle Week of Christmas

I just found this news release about emerging fantasy author Jason J. Bilicic. His fantasy series that comments "on mankind's vanity and the impact of misused power in religion" sounds like my kind of fiction. I'm inspired by similar themes in my writing because the power religion can exert on societies always boggles my mind. The third novel in the Unlife Legend series The Visions of Men will be free on Kindle on Christmas day through December 29th.

Unlife Legend: Cult Series, Hailed as 'Best Battle & Magic in Fantasy', Announces Eagerly-Awaited Third Volume (via SBWire)

New Release for Kindle Azrael's Wrath by Joseph Lewis

As an author I have many contacts among indie authors. This week I received an email from Joseph Lewis announcing the release of his Azrael's Wrath: Book 2 of the Tales of the Magi. He's got some fantastic artwork and great story concepts. Take a look and see if you want to read his work.

At the age of seventeen, the brilliant young seer Iyasu was sent to the west to help a mighty kingdom prosper in peace. But instead, he has brought them to the brink of war. Devastated by his own failures, and haunted by the bloody nightmares he unwittingly unleashed, Iyasu escapes to the jungle in search of the angel Raziel and the help of the magi clerics.

Now he must return to the kingdom he destroyed, accompanied by a healer, a falconer, and three mysterious djinn to confront a blood-thirsty warlord and his legions. But he no longer trusts his own visions, two of the djinn hide terrible secrets, and the Angel of Death herself now stalks the land to punish the wicked for all the death and suffering she has seen in the world. Available now on Amazon Kindle. And if you email me a promise to post a review on Amazon as soon as possible, I will send you the book for free this week.

Thanks!

Nook Reader Appreciation Barnes & Noble Gift Card Giveaway Drawing

To show my appreciation for the thousands of people who have supported me and my novels at the Barnes & Noble Nook book store I'm running a giveaway drawing for a $15 gift card.

The winner will be able to spend the gift card at Barnes & Noble stores or online at Barnesandnoble.com. I know these little gift cards are popular. I've seen them get stolen at white elephant gift exchanges as frequently as bottles of wine.

My fantasy novels have been in the Nook store since 2010, and I've enjoyed consistent sales across all of my titles there. Nook readers are paying my property taxes and homeowners insurance, and I am saying THANK YOU with this humble gift card giveaway.

To enter, please use the link to join my email list:

Drawing closed on 1/1/14. Check back for new gift card giveaways throughout the year.

  • You can always unsubscribe later, but please wait until I send you an email at the end of the drawing. If you unsubscribe immediately instead of confirming that you wanted to join the list, then you won't be among the entrants when I draw the winner.
  • Giveaway is taking entries through December 31st. I'll pick the winner on New Year's Day and email that person an egift card for $15.
  • Drawing is open to U.S. based Nook users. I could not determine if the egift card will work in the Nook store in the UK. Sorry. I love my UK readers too, but I don't make the rules. If anyone knows if a Barnes & Noble egift card will work in the UK store, let me know. I could not find anything in the terms and conditions that said one way or the other.

My audience of Nook readers is important to me. I'm continually grateful for the steady sales that come along month after month. This is how I make my living. I pour my heart into my novels and some people enjoy my artistic endeavors.

Please peruse my list of Nook books to see what I have for you. I've been writing since 1997 and I have 9 novels and 3 nonfiction works published.

My Grandma's Vintage Recipes: Old Standards for a New Age

In 2012 I discovered a handwritten cookbook that my Grandma started writing in 1926. I've salvaged 64 vintage recipes for cookies, quick breads, cakes, fruitcakes, main dishes, and canning recipes. This was a memorial project I did for my late grandmother.

I like to grow and preserve food. Over the years I've taught myself home canning. This is my short how to guide with tips I've learned along the way plus a few recipes.

Preserve the bounty of your garden, support local growers, claim control over ingredients, increase your food security, and enjoy great tasting foods better than anything from a factory.

Once upon a time I was a craps dealer in Las Vegas. Even after I left that job people always wanted me to tell them how to play. So eventually I wrote a book about it.

World Fantasy Con Review

I selected for syndication this thoughtful review written by a participant of the 2013 World Fantasy Convention in Brighton, UK because it gave me some nice perspective on what convention goers get out of the experience. As an author and a vendor at conventions, my experience is very different, and it was educational to get some insight about what visitors want from a convention. The author of this review also had some valid criticisms of the event, but he overwhelmingly had a positive and uplifting experience. < /br>

Will the New Indie Ebook Store Libiro Attract Readers?

I've had my eye on the new indie ebook online store Libiro for about a month. It's out of the UK and operated by Ben Galley and Teague Fullick. This retail ebook store distinguishes itself with its goal to build a 100% indie published catalog. I'm always interested in placing my titles in any viable retail space, but I've learned not to jump too quick at an opportunity. I want Libiro to become a successful magnet for readers who like alternative choices to the tightly defined fiction formulas and genres from mainstream publishers. Adding my titles at Libiro is on my to do list, but I have to be careful with my time. It will take some effort on my part to add all of my work, and I don't want that to be wasted effort on a startup that will fizzle.

It's not that I don't trust the new company. I'm sure that Libiro will pay me for sales.  But I'm not sure how it will attract a customer base. I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm syndicating this interview with Libiro co-founder Ben Galley to help the store gain attention. I think readers should give Libiro a chance to deliver great indie reads. Self published titles have a paucity of options for getting any merchandising love in big retail stores. This means that when you're browsing for something to read at a major retail site you won't see us. So, I very much support this store dedicated to making it easy for readers to discover all the overlooked gems that are out there. Keep in mind that indie does not mean bad. All the publishers in the world cannot accommodate all the talented fiction writers out there. That's why we have to self publish.

Do you like indie books? Then Libiro might be the store for you. Learn more in this interview with Libiro’s co-founder. (via http://awayandaway.com)
While indie books and their authors are gaining a foothold in terms of legitimacy and popularity among readers, there are still few commercial champions of the indie movement. Ben Galley would like to change that, and with his new online marketplace…

Where is the coldest place on Earth?

Because I woke up to a 4-degree morning this headline from the Christian Science Monitor certainly caught my eye. It's comforting to know that my front yard is considerably warmer than a pocket deep in the Antarctic Ice. Even so, I'm still not planning on walking the dog today.

I'm Rooting for Pussy Riot in Possible Russian Amnesty

I found this news hopeful and wanted to share it. My heart breaks for the determined women of Pussy Riot who have lost so much because of their brilliant disrespect of authority. I hope they are released in a possible amnesty for some Russian prisoners backed by Vladimir Putin. Aside from all the reasons to admire these women, I have to stand in awe of a punk band that would name itself Pussy Riot. So much meaning there. So much power.

Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Steampunk Cosplayers Celebrate Imagination at Comic Cons

I recently entered the world of Comic Cons when I attended the Grand Rapids Comic Con in October. I worked as a vendor and found it to be a wonderful experience. I got to enjoy the fun atmosphere and sell my books. Cosplayers are the people who add the most positive energy to these events. Their costumes really set these conventions apart from normal world (boring) events. People have an innate need to express themselves and have fun. Cosplay delivers this. Even for convention goers who don't dress up, the cosplayer presence lets everyone know that it's OK to be a little different. We don't all have to look the same. It's a good thing to be in touch with our imaginations.

I'm syndicating this article from Wizard World, a producer of comic cons across North America because it shows the scope of the cosplaying subculture. Many people enjoy this activity and they put together some fabulous outfits that make these events memorable.

Feeling Warm and Fuzzy from Two New 5-Star Reviews for Rys Rising

Thank you to the reader in the UK who recently left this nice 5-star review for Rys Rising: Book I in the UK Kindle store. It is very fulfilling to know that people out there in the world genuinely enjoy my novels. My tender ego and long labors are rewarded by each one of these kind comments that trickle in year after year. I realize not every person will get that "great read" experience from my stories, but knowing that it can happen truly helps me keep believing in myself.

And when I stopped in the Barnes & Noble site today I noticed that Rys Rising had gotten a new review. The 5-star rating included the statement, "I recommend that if you read fantasy, this book is a must." I've been telling people this for years! Thank you for agreeing with me.

Rys Rising: Book I is available in both the Kindle and Nook stores.

The ebook is $2.99 at the retail outlets, but if you'd like to do business with me directly you can download Rys Rising for free at Brave Luck Books

Paranormal Romance Explained by the Divas on Genre

Today I present an interesting article that defines the paranormal romance genre. As an epic fantasy author who just published her first paranormal novel Werelord Thal, I can say that I found both genres very similar. I think the main difference was in labeling the supernatural creatures.

I especially liked this article because it had some nice demographic information about the paranormal romance audience and the author Lauren Schmelz referred to the indie market as a "grander scale of publishing."

Divas On Genre: Paranormal/Supernatural Romance (via http://writedivas.com)

I'm an aficionado of documentary films. Many of them are quite dark in subject matter as is the case with The Act of Killing from Joshua Oppenheimer. I chose to syndicate the following article because of Werner Herzog's association with the project. I admire his work in particular.

I have not seen a film as powerful, surreal, and frightening in at least a decade. The Act of Killing is unprecedented in the history of cinema.” – German filmmaker Werner Herzog. It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless…

Bad Breath, BO, and Bad Language in Tool Kit for Writing Bad Guys with Guest Blogger Jill Edmondson

New Release Frisky Business (A Sasha Jackson Mystery) by Canadian author Jill Edmonson is the fourth novel starring her female detective described by the author as a "beautiful mess."
Today's guest blogger is Jill Edmondson of Toronto, Canada. To promote the release of her fourth Sasha Jackson mystery Frisky Business, Edmondson reveals today her techniques for making bad guys distasteful.

Make the Bad Guys Really Unlikeable

When I was working on my last mystery novel, there came a point when I became frustrated with some of my secondary characters.  They seemed flat to me.  Now, given that they were secondary or even peripheral, it would not have made sense to give a lot of background and/or a detailed description of them.  But I needed to hint that these guys were not the ones your dad wants you to date.

Some easy ways to SHOW that a character is less than honourable could include the following:

·         Swearing: Just fucking have the fucking character fucking talk like fucking this.

·         Smoking: Do I even need to explain this?  Instant pariah.

·         Poor grammar: Like the characters ain’t got no clue how to speak good, dude.

·         Unkindness to another character: This can be simple, such as not holding the door open for the person behind them when they enter an office building, or budding in line at the convenience store.

·         Unkindness to animals:  Don’t go so far as having them kick a puppy (ACK!!!), but show them griping about the neighbour’s damn poodle peeing on their lawn.  This can make a character come across as churlish.

·         Lack of manners/class: Give the bad guy a dog, but make it so that he does not poop & scoop.

·         Poor hygiene:  Sure, why not give your villain B.O. or halitosis?

·         Unacceptable speech:  This can go as far as using racial terms or terms that are degrading to certain orientations or genders.  Be careful with this, though, as you may offend readers!

Having said all of that, be careful: You don’t want to slide into clich├ęs.  To avoid having that happen, use the ugly stick sparingly.  It can be effective to come at it from an oblique angle, such as having a minor character politely ask the villain not to use the “F word” around children, or have a third party offer the bad guy a breath mint.

Finally, you can have a bit of fun with this by flipping things around.  Use a positive attribute as contrast.  One of the loathsome guys in my last book speaks and acts like a total dirtbag (which he is), and my protagonist is inwardly cringing at having to talk to him for even five minutes.  He grosses her out by chomping loudly and inelegantly on a wad of gum...  But then she realizes that the “gum” is Nicorette (one of those quit-smoking aids).  This small detail makes a big difference.  His quest to quit smoking makes him just a little bit more human, gives him a shred of a redeeming quality.

Writing villains can definitely be challenging, but if you play around with it for a while, you’ll find interesting ways to let their badness reveal itself.
