I've Got the Breaking Bad Bug

I know I'm probably the last person to watch this popular television series. I've heard about it for years, but cancer and crystal meth are pretty grim subjects, so I steered clear.

What finally made me take a look was Bryan Cranston. I enjoy him immensely as the Dad in Malcolm in the Middle. And because I consider comedic talent to be the highest form of acting, I figured he would be quite good in a serious show too.

I'm 5 episodes into Breaking Bad. Five episodes in 5 days is about as close as I get to binge watching. I don't have time to sit and watch 6 hours or more of TV in a day. But if anything could tempt me to binge watch it's Breaking Bad. It's just so powerfully written. The dialogue rings true to life. The social commentary is deep in so many categories. The situations are an artful blend of tragedy and comedy. Walter White's cold calculations alongside his loving heart are like a complex gourmet sauce.

And Skyler White has really captured my heart. How can I not empathize with a fiction-writing woman selling online? It's the pity and disappointment displayed by Skyler's sister that touches my heart. I can relate to family members thinking of one as a silly dreamer wasting her life.

And I officially want a talking pillow.

I'm looking forward to watching more of this show. Although Breaking Bad is not exactly doing for Albuquerque what Portlandia is doing for Portland, it is brilliantly written.
