Artistic Inspirations: Jimi Hendrix and What Foxy Lady Makes Me Think Of

Like many writers, I find music very stimulating to my imagination. I often turn to my music collection when I'm daydreaming before writing. Music helps me see characters and plan out their scenes. And specific pieces of music become associated with characters in my head.

In general I find all music by Jimi Hendrix enormously inspiring. He was a magnificent artist, and the world lost a lot when he met his demise at a young age. Foxy Lady by Jimi Hendrix has a sound that helped me create the scene that introduced Loxane, Shamaness of the Kelsur Tribe in the novel Rys Rising.

That song's grinding groove possessed the untamed and unashamed sexual energy appropriate to Loxane's arrival at the Thievesmeet, an annual assembly of rogues and nomads. Loxane comes down a cliff and casts off her clothes to dance naked before an adoring crowd before joining the Overlord of the Kez in a ritual that sets off an orgy.

Sounds like a good book doesn't it!

Although I wrote that scene many years ago, I still think of it every time I hear Foxy Lady. That song by Hendrix helped me make a "foxy lady" in a novel. The finest art triggers other creative people to spawn new forms from the original. And Hendrix was only continuing a long line of glorifying sexually uninhibited women that surely goes all the way back to the primordial cave of humanity.

I'm sharing this YouTube video of Hendrix performing Foxy Lady at a 1968 Miami concert. Unlike most of the people in the crowd, I would have been up and dancing. Fortunately Hendrix does not seem to mind. He appears to be enjoying himself. His hands waltz with his guitar with graceful ease.

I've been a fan of Hendrix for many years. I have not one but two Hendrix posters in my house and regularly listen to the CDs I have: Axis Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland, and Purple Haze. Alas I seem to no longer have frilly silk shirts like when I was young. Maybe I'll find new ones someday. But I just must find a hat like he's wearing. Too cool!

Readers interested in meeting the foxy lady from the Rys Rising series can download the ebook for free at Brave Luck Books.

Here's the excerpt when she makes her entrance.

People started to cheer and Amar looked up and spotted three figures coming down on ropes. Two men rappelled alongside the third figure that was draped in a voluminous hooded cape. Torches burned on the backs of the men, and the firelight rippled on their well-muscled arms as they came down the ropes.
When they reached the top of the cave entrance, they had no more rock to rappel from and they climbed the rest of the way down with their hands and feet on the ropes. The men alighted on the smooth rock before the cave, and they drew their torches off their backs like they were drawing swords. More slowly, the cloaked figure came down the rope and touched the ground between the two men. Wrapped tightly in the cloak, the third person advanced with the two men into the semi-circle of torches. The crowd became hushed, and Amar found himself sharing in the excitement. The sensation of awe and anticipation surprised him, and he thought nothing of his sorrows for more than one heartbeat.
When the Shamaness Loxane threw off her cape, people cried out with reverence and joy. She was naked and her wonderful body, both strong and soft, glistened in the torchlight. Tattoos of green and blue adorned her body, bright upon her exceptionally light skin. Her hair was long and curly and the most amazing color that Amar had ever seen. Red it was, like copper made soft and inviting. The enticing locks flowed over her shoulders but did not cover her full breasts that displayed her femininity unabashedly.
A sunburst tattoo encircled her navel and tattooed eagles adorned her thighs and perched on her knees. Snake tattoos coiled around her arms and their heads were drawn onto the backs of her hands with forked tongues going down her middle fingers. When she turned, Amar saw an elk tattoo on her back. Its great rack of antlers spread over her shoulder blades and its snout reached to the small of her back. The animal had starbursts in place of eyes, and when Loxane began to sway her body, the elk looked to be shaking its head.
Loxane began to move more of her body, limb by limb. Her hands rotated and then her arms lifted and her shoulders circled. Her torso circled with ever-increasing exaggeration of movement and her pelvis gyrated. Her buttocks lifted and squatted, glorious in their curvaceous smoothness.
The Shamaness Loxane danced naked in front of the gathered rogues and lawless wanderers, and she had no shame. Amar watched every move of her body, only blinking when he consciously thought to do it. Never had he seen, nor imagined, a woman making such a display of herself. And never had he imagined that a woman could be so beautiful, so powerful, but so wicked.
People were playing drums for her. First one drummer, and then three, and then dozens pounded a beat that was all life and no judgment. Their rhythms guided her and coaxed her to move faster. Her body joined with the beating of the drums, until the drummers seemed to respond to her movement as much as she responded to them.
Loxane moved to the edge of the semi-circle of torches and began to dance around the edge. People reached out to her but did not touch. She arched and swayed just beneath the fingertips of her admirers.
The crowd pressed hard against Amar and Gadoh as Loxane came closer to their position. Like all the others, Amar had no intention of giving up his spot. He turned sideways so that two more men could squeeze in next to him. Behind him, Gadoh giggled.
Closer she came to Amar, and his breath quickened and his eyes widened. The absolute scandal of her brazen nudity and erotic dancing pounded against all that his culture had ingrained in him about the modesty of women. Far back in his mind, his sensibilities railed against her outrageousness. She was the worst of the worst, criminal beyond the most wanton whore, but Amar paid less attention to the dogma of his upbringing the closer she danced to him. Indeed, as Gadoh had said, Loxane was among the greatest of wonders.
Although enthralled by her provocative display, Amar did not reach out to her when she danced before him. The fellows alongside him spread out their hands toward her, just barely missing her skin, but Amar only looked. His eyes went up and down her body, and he was truly awed by her lovely strength that went past simple maddening sexuality. His eyes traveled up her naked body, pausing at her breasts that glistened with the sweat of her dance, and then he looked at her face. Loxane’s eyes were half rolled back. The trance of her dance was deep upon her. Her lips hung open as if she would cry out with ecstasy at any moment.
Amar envied the oblivion on her face, doubting he could ever experience such inner peace.
Loxane’s eyes snapped into focus. The men reaching for her withdrew their hands, each gasping as if the snakes on her arms had come to life with venomous anger. She stopped dancing and lowered her arms. Her chest heaved with hard breathing and she stared intently at Amar.
He looked into her eyes that were shockingly blue.
In the background, the drums continued to beat, loud and hard like the heartbeat thudding in Amar’s ears. Just when the drums started to slow, she began to dance again, but this time with her eyes firmly on Amar. She took her gaze from him only when her dancing steps spun her around. She studied him and then step by step moved away. Amar watched her go. He could not have described his feelings. Desire, curiosity, perhaps even wariness confused him as he realized that she had shown him special attention.

As the series continues, Loxane develops into an important character. She even made the cover of the third book New Religion.

Now on Google Play Books The Rys Chronicles Fantasy Series

Year in and year out my first novel Union of Renegades entices people to enter the world of the rys alongside Dreibrand Veta. It's finally on Google Play. This is terribly overdue. I apologize for taking so long to add all four novels of The Rys Chronicles to this global destination for Android book readers.

As elsewhere, Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I is a free Google Play fantasy book. After it comes The Goddess Queen, Judgment Rising, and the conclusion The Borderlands of Power.

In Union of Renegades you'll meet Dreibrand Veta, an officer with the Atrophane Horde. And yes it's a big deal to be part of the horde conquering the known world. Dreibrand is young and ambitious. He's out to rebuild his family's fortune. But at a critical moment, he realizes he's just never going to get what he wants working for his boss, the Hordemaster Kwan Chenomet.

Dreibrand does something rash. He ends up wanted and in the company of an escaped slave, Miranda. With her two young children, she is fleeing the brutal onslaught of the Atrophane. Together they enter the Wilderness. No one ever comes back from this place.

And so Dreibrand and Miranda are ensnared by magic and pass into the world of the rys where the Goddess Onja has ruled the western tribal kingdoms for over two thousand years. She sits upon the greatest treasure. Every year it grows as warring tribes deliver their tribute. Her rival Shan lives at her side, waiting for something to change so he can destroy her.

See where this epic series takes you.

If you enjoy the sample, you've just discovered a 19-hour epic fantasy audiobook. It is available worldwide in mp3 format at my website Brave Luck Books for only $8.95. You can also get it Audible US, Audible UK, and iTunes if you prefer. But I don't control the prices at those retailers. It might cost more or less.

An unconventional heroine will tug at your sympathies as she bravely faces adversity with all the strengths and vulnerabilities of her womanhood. And overarching it all are the rys. You Will Not Find My Fantasy Books on Kindle Unlimited

If you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, please be aware that none of my novels will be available through that program. Amazon prohibits me from participating in that program because I do not sell my ebooks exclusively through Amazon. Therefore Kindle Unlimited subscribers may not access my titles with their subscription.

I know that I've connected with many readers over the years at Amazon. That's why I wanted to make sure everyone understood why my fantasy ebooks aren't part of the subscription service. Because I choose to market my creations to a global audience through all available retail outlets, Amazon limits my availability to its customers.

So if you've been waiting for my novels to appear at Kindle Unlimited, their absence is not my choice. I'm generally happy to sell my ebooks through any venue. My complete catalog has been available to subscribers at Scribd and Oyster all year. From what I've received for compensation from Scribd and Oyster, I feel that I am fairly paid by those services. However, I've read that some authors are unhappy with what they are paid from Kindle Unlimited. I can't say for myself because I'm not there.

For people who read on their Kindles you'll need to purchase my ebooks the regular way to read them. My titles may never be part of Kindle Unlimited.

Even Gods Have Their First Day at Work

Last month at the Grand Rapids Comic Con I got to meet another West Michigan author. Steve LeBel introduced himself. He was keen for advice about marketing his delightful novel The Universe Builders. I think he's off to a fantastic start. With close to a 5-star rating at Amazon out of 119 reviews, he's a natural at pleasing readers. I should take advice from him.

His book is available for Kindle and Paperback

About The Universe Builders:

What if God got a C- in Universe Building 101?

(Well, not our God, of course. One of those other guys...)

Dive into a humorous fantasy world unlike anything you have imagined - a world of gods and goddesses who build universes for a living. Are they all-powerful and all-knowing? Well, not exactly...

As Bernie graduates from God School, he is thrilled to land his dream job as a builder of universes. His first assignment is to build his own universe. Determined but unsure, bright but without confidence, Bernie forges ahead, only to find problems everywhere. Mysterious asteroids, unexplained volcanoes, shifting continents and more lead him to suspect sabotage. But who could sabotage his universe? Only another god could do that...

It’s god vs. god, guile vs. goodness, where only one of them plays by the rules. Bernie must find a way to outwit his vicious foe. If he fails, it will cost him everything.

A fascinating tale of good vs. evil and a young hero on a journey of self-discovery in an original, humorous, fantastic wrapper.

Kobo Data Reveals Most Finished Book is Self Published

An ebook readership data analysis just revealed by retailer Kobo contained an interesting surprise. The title that earned the highest rate of reader completion was Rotten to the Core self published by Casey Kelleher.

So much for the notion that self published automatically means bad. It does not. In this example it was the title Kobo readers found the most engaging.

The article Haven’t Finished Reading that Bestseller? You're Not Alone at Publishing Perspectives also reported that some best-selling titles were among those with the highest rates of reader abandonment.

For example only 44.4% of readers completed The Goldfinch by Donna Tart, a Pulitzer Prize winner. That prize might have gotten it enough attention to make the bestseller lists, but it proved unable to captivate over half of the people who bought it. The Goldfinch may very well be an intelligent work but that does not mean it's a good read. I often consider a big award a sign that the book might be dull. Awards are good ways to boost sales. That's why they exist.

Sometime bestsellers are great books. Sometimes they're not. Popularity arises for many reasons, and quality is not the determining factor.

Ultimately what readers find comes down to individual tastes. People often buy bestsellers because they are visible. Then some of those people end up not liking the book enough to finish it.

I really appreciated the data shared by Kobo. I was encouraged to see that readers finished their fantasy books 60 percent of the time.

Readers who shop at Kobo can find all of my titles there. I have some free ebooks. It won't cost you a thing to finish them.

10 Things Readers Want from Authors

Readers want to be taken away from the moment and engrossed in a story. Aching to know what will happen, they want to be pulled from one chapter to the next.

That's no small order. And even the most finely crafted novel won't work for everybody.

As an author, my thoughts are with my readers when I'm writing a novel. I have fans on my email list who will buy an ebook as soon as I publish it. I don't want to disappoint them.

Here are 10 things that I consider as I write and edit novels.

1. Readers don't want to be bored. This is a constant challenge, especially when creating a half million word multi-book series that requires a lot of literary infrastructure like world building and character development. The trick is to always have something happening while all this pipe is being laid.

2. Readers want to be surprised. I strive to inject unexpected twists and problems while moving a plot forward. Even when there's nothing shocking happening, things like a sparkling exchange of dialogue can delight the reader along the way to the next crisis.

3. Readers want to learn something. This could be anything like history or psychological insights about humanity. Within my fiction I often prod people to see greater truths about power and human behavior. What people want to believe about people and society is often not reality.

4. Readers want to feel for the characters. When they have to put the book down and go to work, they want to think about a character all day. They want to worry and anticipate getting back to the story.

5. Readers want a strong and intriguing start that leads to a rousing finish. In my life as a reader, I've too often encountered books that start out well but go nowhere. Sometimes in a series a first book has to hint at big things to come. If it must end as a cliff hanger, it's important to have lots of action occur before it. This way the reader still gets an experience and hopefully becomes wrapped up in the challenges faced by the characters. The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien is a good example of this. Nothing is resolved in the novel. The breaking of the fellowship offers the climax and leaves the reader craving more.

6. Readers want to know what's going on! People can only stay curious for explanations for so long. And for pity's sake answer at least some of the questions posed by the story. Sometimes things can be left shrouded in mystery, but I always aim to let my readers have clues about what's going on and what's coming. Suspense is not created by withholding information. Suspense comes from suspecting what will happen and wanting to find out. For example, I was not too far into reading Pet Sematary by Stephen King when I realized that the little boy would die and be raised from the dead. Dreading this horror, I read on and loved every bit of it.

7. Readers want someone they can relate to. This is somewhat controversial for me. Although I've created lots of relatable characters, I don't believe they are essential. Readers can be fascinated by someone who's not like them. I can't relate to Conan the Barbarian, but I can love his adventures. I have nothing in common with the reprehensible Michael Corleone, but he's unforgettable. I've often pondered his motivations and tried to understand him. A good novel expands a reader's perception of the world.

8. Readers want to use their imaginations. Writing advice, especially fiction writing advice, often advocates for being sparing with detail so readers can fill in the scenes themselves. I prefer to say that details need to be chosen carefully. They build a framework that readers can decorate with their imagination. The better the frame, the more inviting it becomes to the reader. In my education as a journalist I was taught that details are the stock and trade of good journalism. Things should not be left to the imagination in news reporting. One needs to be clear. With fiction, however, this detail-centric form of writing can be adapted. Details are essential to crafting vivid images and emotions. But don't beat readers over their heads with them. The needs of every reader cannot be met in this regard. Some will relish every detail and immerse themselves in the experience. Other will deem the writing long winded.

9. Readers want a book to be memorable. I know a book was superior when I keep thinking about it after I'm done reading it. Some books stick with me for years, and that's the mark of a great read.

10. Readers want to love your book. Every time a reader chooses a book to read, he or she wants it to be amazing. They are ready and willing to enjoy the experience. And when authors deliver this thrill to readers, it's a beautiful thing. We can keep making it happen by always reading more books.

Free Nook Books for Fantasy Lovers

People who read ebooks enjoy many opportunities to discover new offers. Many authors like myself offer free ebooks to attract readers. The low cost of digital production enables this free sample model.

Right now all three of my series starters are free on Nook in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Rys Rising: Book I

Rys Rising has been well received by Nook readers, earning a 4.5 star rating.

Here are some Nook review samples:

"Everything is here. Magic. World building. Multidimensional character. Pathos. Conflict."

"I enjoyed this book. I recommend that if you read fantasy, this book is a must."

The Rys Rising series offers readers fantasy action and a saga told through multiple points of view. You'll experience the conflict from both sides as I weave together the stories of many characters. You'll find someone to love, to hate, and to never forget in my stories.

About the novel:

A young warrior ruined and near death is saved by Onja a mysterious rys female. Forsaking all that he was, he will take the name Amar and serve his new magical mistress. A lord among outlaws he will become, feared by kings and called the dro-shalum or curse demon by the common folk.

Read it for free on Nook or Nook UK.

Werelord Thal: A Renaissance Werewolf Tale

Werelord Thal introduces my newest series Werewolves in the Renaissance. I have not had a chance to do much marketing for this series yet, so Werelord Thal does not have many reviews at Nook. But now that it's free more people will give it a look and discover a fast-paced novel rich in historical detail and werewolf action.

About the novel:

Thal embodies the ancient magic of the pagan past. He challenges a world conquered by a spiritual system that denies the flesh and forgets the Earth.

Although wanted for Devil worship and shape shifting, he still boldly walks the streets of 16th century Prague. Jesuits hunt him. Mercenaries fear him. Musicians sing his praise, and women are captivated by his alpha swagger.

Download it free on Nook and at Nook UK.

Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I

This is the first novel I wrote and it's been in the Nook store since Barnes & Noble entered the ebook market. At over 200 reviews it's gotten a lot of 5-star praise and 1-star hate. But since it's a free Nook book, it costs you nothing to decide for yourself.

It is a Medieval style epic fantasy with romantic elements. The relationship between the hero and heroine develops throughout the series as they face great challenges and eventually found their own society.

About the novel:

The epic begins as Dreibrand Veta and the conquering Horde of the Atrophane Empire reach a mythic Wilderness that beckons with a magical call to glory. But Onja, Queen of the rys, a race far more powerful than the greatest human state, guards this land. She has the power to imprison souls and her genocidal rage is legendary. Everything is at risk for her desperate enemies, the union of renegades.

You can get Union of Renegades for free at Nook and Nook UK.

Beginnings Box Set: Three Fantasy Series Starters

If you're curious about all of my free Nook Books but don't like to push a lot of buttons, you can get all three in this free box set.

About the Box Set:

Enter Tracy Falbe’s fantasy worlds through three different doors. She brings the folklore of Renaissance Bohemia to life in Werelord Thal that can be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel. Choosing your next book is not tied to making a purchase decision. With a subscription, you've set your budget for reading for the month and you consume books as you need them.

So enough about subscription ebook reading at Scribd. What is Journey of the Hunted about?

It continues the story begun in Werelord Thal: A Renaissance Werewolf Tale. However, it's not necessary that you read Werelord Thal first unless you want to. I'm designing each title in this series as a story that can be enjoyed on its own. Of course you'll likely become curious about what happened before, but it won't prevent you from understanding what is going on in Journey of the Hunted.

About the Novel:

Facing uncertain destinies, Thal and Altea must escape Bohemia. The Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand himself has signed the warrant for Thal’s capture on charges of shape shifting and the killing of Jesuits.

A hefty reward attracts countless bounty hunters into the heart of this 16th century Christian empire. Thal emerges from hiding with his young wife Altea who is barely recovered from torture at the hands of witch hunters. With his werewolf powers, he battles the bounty hunters and begins a daring journey across the Holy Roman Empire.

But more than men stalk him. Servants of Tekax, sorcerer to the Turks, have been unleashed upon his trail.

The werewolf Rotfeng covets the enchanted fur that lets Thal change form at will, regardless of the phase of the moon.

Worse yet comes Janfelter, an undying fext created in the dark fortress of Tekax.

These heartless killers are tasked with stopping Thal from reaching his father Sarputeen, the arch nemesis of Tekax. Thal’s only refuge awaits him in what is left of the Kingdom of Hungary after a Turkish conquest. In the remote castle Vlkbohveza the ancient sorcerer Sarputeen lives untouched despite widespread persecution of magic users and pagans.

Although Thal longs to be with his own kind, he worries about the reunion with his father. It was Sarputeen’s magic that made Thal a werelord, a master of wolves. But what shall the sorcerer require of his creation now that Tekax aims to settle an old score?

Looking for Some of the Best Free Kindle Fantasy Books?

Have you tried joining those email blast services that send you book recommendations?

I've done a few and gotten some great reads from them, but then the daily emails get tiresome. I don't read that fast and can only browse the occasional email because I get a lot of email because I manage two businesses. That means I'm not seeing the majority of the free and discounted ebook alerts.

You've probably had a similar experience. Since it's highly unlikely that you will actually see any of my ads through such services, I'm posting here the free fantasy books for Kindle I have available.

First up is the free series starter Rys Rising: Book I. You'll get a 175,000 words of epic adventure in a fantasy world where humans live under the dominion of magical races. Rys Rising recently went all the way up to #3 in the sword and sorcery category at Amazon on November 4th. As the reviews prove, this is not one for fantasy fans to miss.

About this free Kindle book:

A young warrior ruined and near death is saved by Onja a mysterious rys female. Forsaking all that he was, he will take the name Amar and serve his new magical mistress. A lord among outlaws he will become, feared by kings and called the dro-shalum or curse demon by the common folk.

Amazon just recently started price matching to free on this title that is a free ebook at other retailers.

It's free for Kindle in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

Kindle US
Kindle UK
Kindle Canada

Another free series starter at Kindle is Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I. This is the first novel I published when I started publishing fiction in 2006. It has drawn thousands of people into the world of The Rys Chronicles. The novels of The Rys Chronicles remain my best sellers and many people have given them 5 stars at various retailers.

ALSO NOTE: Union of Renegades has been in the top 50 epic fantasy and fantasy romance at Kobo (a popular ebook retailer in Canada) for months.

About this free fantasy Kindle book:

The epic begins as Dreibrand Veta and the conquering Horde of the Atrophane Empire reach a mythic Wilderness that beckons with a magical call to glory. But Onja, Queen of the rys, a race far more powerful than the greatest human state, guards this land. She has the power to imprison souls and her genocidal rage is legendary. Everything is at risk for her desperate enemies, the union of renegades.

What about my new series Werewolves in the Renaissance? Can people start reading it for free on Kindle?

Werelord Thal the first book of the Werewolves in the Renaissance series is only $0.99 in Kindle stores. I don't have the ability to price anything for free on Kindle. It only happens when Amazon price matches other retailers. So, you can ask Amazon to price match Werelord Thal or get a copy of the Kindle format for free at Brave Luck Books or Smashwords. Choose the .mobi file.

About Werelord Thal:

Thal embodies the ancient magic of the pagan past. He challenges a world conquered by a spiritual system that denies the flesh and forgets the Earth.

Although wanted for Devil worship and shape shifting, he still boldly walks the streets of 16th century Prague. Jesuits hunt him. Mercenaries fear him. Musicians sing his praise, and women are captivated by his alpha swagger.

Teaser from Redemption (Short Story):

No, he’d receive no help from his parents. They’d sold him just as they’d sell all ten of his sisters. He was dead to them. He would never be free.

Silevethiel (The Vaelinel Trilogy #1)

Fantasy | Young Adult

Rescued by the elf prince, Laegon Elendell, Irewen awakes an exile with no home, no country, and no people. The world of Vaelinel is failing—its fate bound to her in ways no one fully understands. A mysterious elven prophecy may provide her with some answers, but continuously hunted and fighting for her life, Irewen quickly learns that unearthing the truth will be more difficult than she ever imagined. Can she accept Laegon’s love and the friendship of the Wood Elves, or will she stand alone against the terrifying evil now threatening to destroy the entire world?

Teaser from Silevethiel (The Vaelinel Trilogy #1):

A voice penetrated Irewen's deep sleep.

Her father said only one word, her name, but he was so desperate in his calling that she was immediately pulled from her slumber. She woke, searching in vain for the man she knew wouldn’t be there, couldn’t be there. Sorrow filled her heart anew when he didn’t answer her silent plea. But amidst the all too familiar grief, there flowered a warm bubble of joy.

She had heard his voice, and she had not forgotten.

Fun Fact about Silevethiel (The Vaelinel Trilogy #1):

A few people have commented that they don't understand why Silevethiel is the title of the book and focus of the cover when she isn't the main character. It's true, she isn't, but that makes her no less important. She's mysterious. We don't actually meet her until about half-way through the book, but she's an essential figure in the lives of the Elves as well as the main character. So much depends on her. Without her, the fate of Irewen, the Elves, and the world of Vaelinel would be much different.

The Lost Heir (The Dragonath Chronicles #1)

Fantasy | Adult

Always a meticulous planner, Darrak Hunter leads a typically straightforward and dull life until his dreams unexpectedly become plagued with visions of a peculiar and distant world. Waking up to a brilliant purple sun looming ominously in the sky, Darrak is met by a mysterious violet-eyed sorcerer who whisks him away from the struggling Earth. Thrown into the clutches of a foreign world where magic is reality and not all is as it seems, Darrak embarks on a journey where he is forced to come to terms with his past and do what he can to shape the future. Accompanied by a talented swordswoman, a prince, and a beautiful young sorceress, he must overcome cunning plots of treachery and betrayal to discover the strength to stand against a destructive black magic and an enemy who is a master at deception.

Interview:

When did you start writing?
I began writing in 2003 as something fun to do in my spare time. The manuscript would go untouched for months, and there were many times where I'd have to re-read the entire thing because I forgot what I'd written. I didn't become serious with my writing until the summer of 2011. My mom died in the spring, and I wanted to finish The Lost Heir in her memory. Since then I've become addicted to writing and it's all I do!

What inspires your writing?
This may sound rather cliche, but my writing is inspired by everything! What I love about Fantasy is that even though it's entirely make-believe, it's real. You may think I'm completely nuts, but I'm not, I promise! Part of what draws people into Fantasy and what makes it so relatable is that it is so steeped in reality. There's real emotions, real issues, real struggles, real dilemmas. Fantasy is unique in that I can let my imagination and creativity take me anywhere. I have no limitations other than the confines of the world I create. But reality has a large impact on my writing, and because of that I find inspiration everywhere. I've touched topics such as rape, abortion, religion, equality, defying stereotypes, female empowerment, and epidemics...to name a few. And my inspiration will only continue to grow.

What is the best part about being a writer?
The best part of being a writer is touching other people with something I created. Inspiring others and making them think or consider things they might not have is such a wonderful feeling. Taking readers to other worlds and letting them feel like they're with the characters and experiencing the events themselves is truly a wondrous ability.

Is there something special or unique about you or your book you'd like to tell us about?
I'm extremely passionate about the empowerment of women, and it's something I include in some form or another in all my writing. In The Lost Heir, the main warrior sworn to protect Darrak is a female. But Andillrian isn't the typical female warrior commonly seen in Fantasy. She's shines because of her abilities, not because she's wearing 'armour' that amounts to a string bikini and shows off her large breasts, tiny waist, and round butt. She doesn't have to disguise herself as a man in order to fight. She's respected and revered because of who she is and the skills she brings to the table.
